Biography

Professor Olufemi Bamiro had his secondary school education at Molusi College, Ijebu-lgbo, passing out with a Grade 1 in the West African School Certificate (WASC), Ordinary Level in 1965. He proceeded to Government College, Ibadan for his Higher School Certificate (HSC) and passed out in 1967 with a result adjudged to be the best in the country that year at the Cambridge Higher School Certificate (Advanced Level). As Shell Scholar, he attended Nottingham University, Nottingham, England for his first degree graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Mechanical Engineering, First Class Honours. Between 1972 and 1975, Professor Bamiro attended McGill University, Montreal, Canada as a Commonwealth Scholar. He completed his Doctorate (Ph.D.) degree in the record time of two years and five months after First Degree having gained special exception from Master’s Degree.

Professor Bamiro joined the services of the University of Ibadan in September 1975 as Lecturer I in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He was promoted Senior Lecturer, 1978; Reader, 1981 and the First Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 1983 and First Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 2021. He served the University of Ibadan in various capacities, which include: Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering; Dean, Faculty of Technology; Director, University of Ibadan Management Information System (MIS) Unit; Deputy Vice-chancellor (Administration); and finally, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan from 2005 to 2010. The latter was recognised by the Visitation Panel to the University as a period of significant transformation of the physical and academic environment of the University.  

Professor Bamiro is a recipient of many scholarships, Fellowships and Awards including “Merit Award” Winner, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Best Practice Award by the United Nations Human Settlement (UN-Habitat) in respect of the Organo-Mineral Fertiliser Plant Design and Construction Project, and Distinguished Shell Scholar Award (2013). 

He is: Fellow, Solar Energy Society of Nigeria (FSESN), 1991; Fellow, Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), 2004; Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science (FAS), 2007; and Fellow, the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, 2012.

At the National level he served in different panels and committees: Secretary of the 24-man Panel that produced the Energy Policy for Nigeria in 1984; Member of the 6-man Committee that prepared the Blueprint for the implementation of the National Science and Technology Policy for Nigeria in 1987; UNESCO Consultant for the Reform of the National Science, Technology and Innovation System in Nigeria, 2005; Chairman of the Screening and Monitoring Committee of the National Research Fund (NRF) under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for a period of nine years (2012-2021) during which several thousands of Concept Notes/Full Proposals were processed leading to Research Grants of N13.5Billion being awarded in support of close to 460 Research Proposals;  Project Implementation Support Specialist I to The World Bank under the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE) Project (2020 to Date); Chairman of the 5-man Technical Board of the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI), Ilesa under the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) (2021 to Date); and The Lead Consultant, appointed by the Lagos State Government, for the transmutation to universities of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Oto-Ijanikin, and Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, Epe.

He has served in different capacities in selected universities in Nigeria including Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Elizade University, Ilara Mokin (2019 to Date) and Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-Ode (2014-2018). He has also served as member of governing councils of four other universities.

Professor Bamiro has close to 85 Publications in Learned Journals and refereed Proceedings on Solid Mechanics, Energy, Science and Technology Policy and Entrepreneurship. He is also author of several books in Introductory Technology, Solid Mechanics for Engineers, and Entrepreneurship. He is Consultant to several companies in both the private and public sectors of the Nation’s economy as well as International Agencies.

Emeritus Professor Olufemi Adebisi Bamiro is happily married and blessed with children.
